At a typical one story wall section, I developed a two dimensional, steady-state, thermal computer models (simulating conditions consistent with winter design temperatures). Using these models, I identified “cold spots” in the assembly that are most likely to develop condensation.  These models were developed using the program THERM.  Boundary conditions were prescribed assuming a minimum exterior temperature of -5 degrees Fahrenheit, an average interior temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and adiabatic conditions along the section cuts.  Alternate models were produced for each wall section to investigate different types and degrees of insulation.
